Launched in 2009 by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the African Diaspora Marketplace (ADM) aims to encourage sustainable economic growth and employment by supporting African diaspora entrepreneurs. ADM entrepreneurs are individuals with demonstrable connections to or experience in Africa, and who have innovative and high-impact start-ups or established businesses on the continent.

The African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) is a network of 1600 women across 22 chapters supported by the U.S. Department of State and USAID. Given the parallel objectives of the two initiatives, this partnership aims to leverage the ADM and AWEP platforms to support women entrepreneurs and encourage their participation in the ADM program.

The African Diaspora Marketplace (ADM III), an initiative that promotes sustainable economic growth and job creation in Africa by supporting African diaspora entrepreneurs. Launched in 2009 by USAID and Western Union, the African Diaspora Marketplace aims to encourage sustainable economic growth and employment by supporting African diaspora entrepreneurs. ADM entrepreneurs are individuals with demonstrable connections to or experience in Africa, and who have innovative and high impact start-ups or established businesses on the continent.

The Small Enterprise Assistance Funds serves as the implementing partner of ADM.

Tailored Support

  • ADM has organized three rigorous Business Plan Competitions to identify and provide support to the most promising African diaspora entrepreneurs.
  • ADM has awarded 34 sub-Saharan Africa, Libyan and Tunisian diaspora-owned SMEs with matched grants to start or expand businesses in their home countries
  • ADM works closely with the awardees to address their business challenges and to leverage the grant/support provided into additional opportunities.

Ecosystem Development

  • ADM provides a platform to connect lenders and investors with entrepreneurs across the continent.
  • ADM and its partners have held two Small Medium Enterprise (SME) banking forums, an SME investor pitch event as well as trainings and webinars to help entrepreneurs across Africa successfully access external financing.
  • The ADM team provides industry, trade and technology information to support business growth and innovation.
